The Kardashev Scale

In 1964, while searching for signs of extraterrestrial life in the radio spectrum, Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev asked himself a fundamental question: if we manage to contact an alien civilization, how will we measure how advanced they are?

The answer he proposed was not based on ethics, philosophy, or the computing power of their machines. It was based on the most universal and immutable currency in the cosmos: energy.

Kardashev understood that technological progress and space expansion require exponential amounts of power. Thus was born the scale that bears his name, a metric system that classifies civilizations based on their ability to harness energy from their environment.

The ultimate metric of evolution

For a species to go from lighting fires in caves to manipulating the fabric of spacetime, it needs to master increasingly massive energy sources. The original Kardashev Scale divided this evolutionary mastery into three titanic leaps.

Type I: The Planetary Civilization

A Type I civilization has achieved total mastery over its home planet. They are capable of harnessing, storing, and consuming all the available energy that reaches their planet from its neighboring star, as well as the planet’s internal energy (winds, tides, earthquakes, and volcanoes).

  • Energy consumption: Approximately 10¹⁶ watts.
  • Technological milestones: Commercial nuclear fusion, absolute climate control, near-Earth asteroid mining, and a planetary artificial intelligence network. For a Type I, natural disasters are a solved engineering problem.

Type II: The Stellar Civilization

If Type I dominates a planet, Type II dominates a solar system. They have exhausted the resources of their home world and taken the next logical step: capturing the total energy output of their own star.

  • Energy consumption: Approximately 10²⁶ watts (10 billion times more than Type I).
  • Technological milestones: The construction of megastructures. The most famous example is the Dyson Sphere, a swarm of satellites or panels that completely envelops the star to absorb its radiation. A Type II civilization is virtually immune to natural extinction; if their star threatens to explode, they would have the necessary energy to move their planet or alter the star itself (using Shkadov thrusters).

Type III: The Galactic Civilization

The Lords of the Galaxy. They have expanded their domain by colonizing thousands or millions of solar systems, building Dyson Spheres around countless stars, and extracting energy from supermassive black holes.

  • Energy consumption: Approximately 10³⁶ watts.
  • Technological milestones: Travel at near (or theoretically faster-than) light speeds, spacetime manipulation, and the ability to redesign entire galaxies. To us, the actions of a Type III would be indistinguishable from magic or natural astrophysical phenomena.

Carl Sagan’s calculation: Type 0

Kardashev didn’t include humanity in his original scale because we didn’t even reach the bare minimum. It was Carl Sagan who refined the scale mathematically in 1973 to include fractions. Using a formula based on our global energy consumption at the time, Sagan calculated that we were a Type 0.7 civilization.

Where are we? (Level 0.73)

Today, humanity stands roughly at Type 0.73. We still get most of our energy from dead plants and animals (fossil fuels), we are at the mercy of natural disasters, and we have yet to establish a permanent colony off Earth.

However, we are in the most critical transition. Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku estimates that, if we don’t destroy ourselves through nuclear wars, engineered pandemics, or ecological collapse (the dreaded Great Filter), we could reach Type I status in the next 100 to 200 years.

The arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the imminent commercialization of nuclear fusion, and the Artemis Mission returning to the Moon are the first heartbeats of a planetary organism trying to wake up.

The Kardashev Scale is not just a theoretical classification in astronomy; it is our roadmap. The mirror we must look into to decide whether we will be a forgotten geological statistic, or the future architects of the stars.
